A visit to the Ilocos Region would be incomplete without a stop at the Patapat Viaduct, the 5th longest bridge in the Philippines. This remarkable structure, situated in the municipality of Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte, rises 31 meters above the seashore. Serving as more than just a bridge, it connects the Maharlika Highway in the Ilocos Region to the neighboring province of Cagayan Valley, making it an essential coastal link between the two regions.
Stretching over 1.3 kilometers, the Patapat Bridge serves as a vital link between two barangays in Pagudpud. Its distinctive zigzag design has earned it the nickname “French Riviera of the North.” As visitors and motorists traverse this bridge, which stands at an impressive 200 meters above sea level, they are treated to breathtaking vistas of the sea and lush mountains. This bridge was constructed with a specific purpose in mind: to address the issue of landslides in the area, which had previously led to vehicular accidents.
It’s flanked on the other side of the West Philippine Sea, making it a perfect spot for taking photos. The Mabugabog Falls, a mini-hydro plant, can also be found along the viaduct.
Travelers have the opportunity to stop along the roadside and capture stunning photos against the backdrop of mountains and the sea. Patapat Viaduct is in close proximity to both Batanes and Taiwan, with radio signals from Taiwan even reaching the area at night! These tourist spots promise to astonish visitors. Additionally, you can explore the Cape Bojeador Lighthouse situated in the town of Burgos, a fifth-class municipality in the province of Ilocos Norte, Philippines.
