Philippines Solar Energy Mindanao

Did you know that Cagayan de Oro, Mindanao, has one of the largest solar power plants in the Philippines? It is called the 1-Megawatt Photovoltaic Power Plant, built by CEPALCO (Cagayan de Oro Electric Power and Light Company). Together with the CDO Bloggers members, we visited the solar power plant in Indahag, Cagayan de Oro.

It was my first time visiting a solar energy plant, and I was amazed by what I saw. I never imagined that our city had a solar power plant like this. The plant helps supply clean and renewable electricity to Cagayan de Oro. It was exciting to see how solar energy can help provide electricity for the community. This visit also gave me a better understanding of renewable energy and its importance to our city.

The solar power plant covers two hectares and was inaugurated in 2004. This 1-MW solar facility can supply electricity to around 900 CEPALCO residential customers. CEPALCO also planned to expand its solar power operations at Phivedic Industrial Estate in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental. The proposed project would cover 30 hectares and have a 20-MW capacity.

It could provide electricity to approximately 18,000 CEPALCO customers. This project could also help address the power shortage affecting Mindanao. One of CEPALCO’s major owners, Mr. Abaya, strongly supports solar energy and promotes the use of green energy. Below are some advantages of a Solar Energy Plant.

Advantages of Solar Energy

  • Cleaner and greener: Solar energy produces clean electricity without the pollution caused by many traditional power plants.
  • Low maintenance: Solar panels require minimal maintenance after installation.
  • Renewable energy: Solar energy comes from sunlight, making it a renewable and sustainable energy source.
  • Reliable: Solar panels can provide electricity for many years with proper care and maintenance.
  • Quiet operation: Solar panels produce electricity without creating noise during operation.
  • Lower long-term costs: Solar electricity can cost less than buying electricity from a power company.
  • Energy independence: Solar systems can provide electricity without connecting directly to the power grid.
  • Sell excess electricity: Some solar systems allow owners to sell unused electricity back to the power grid.
  • Government incentives: Solar energy systems may qualify for government tax credits and other financial incentives.
  • Improving technology: Solar technology continues to improve, making solar energy more efficient and affordable.
