Fort Santiago Intramuros

Welcome to Fort Santiago Intramuros

Welcome to Fort Santiago Intramuros, a historical landmark located in the heart of Manila, Philippines. This iconic fortress was built by the Spanish conquistador, Miguel López de Legazpi, in 1571 to defend the city against foreign invasions.

Over the centuries, Fort Santiago has witnessed some of the Philippines’ most significant historical events, from the Spanish colonial period to World War II. The fortress was used as a military base, a prison, and a torture chamber during the Spanish and American colonial periods. It was also the site of the execution of the Philippines’ national hero, Jose Rizal, in 1896.

Today, Fort Santiago has been transformed into a popular tourist destination and cultural center. Visitors can explore the fortress’s numerous historical landmarks, including the Rizal Shrine, the Baluarte de Santa Barbara, and the Pasadizo de los Cañones. The fort also houses a museum that displays various artifacts and memorabilia from the Philippine Revolution.

Visiting Fort Santiago is a must for anyone interested in Philippine history and culture. So, come and discover the stories of the Philippines’ past within the walls of this impressive fortress.

Fort Santiago, Intramuros Visits

During our stay in Manila, we did not forget to visit the famous place where we can see our National hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal. The place is Fort Santiago Intramuros, this is my first time visiting this place and I really appreciate it. The entrance of the gate is modern (I think they develop it well for the tourist to visit). Inside Fort Santiago, you see the beautiful parks and old buildings preserved to make it one of the tourist spots in this place. What I like most is the uniform of the security guard at Fort Santiago which is not modern because they are wearing the Guardia Civil uniform and I like it because I feel we are in the area of Spaniards.

Aside from the beautiful inside you can see also the famous transportation that was used during the Spanish time the KARTALISA. What I like most also inside Fort Santiago is the place where our National Hero stayed while he was captured by the Spanish wherein we can see the memory of Dr. Jose P. Rizal. All the exhibits inside the building are antiques; you can see books, paintings, sculptures, clothes of Dr. Jose Rizal, and many others. I don’t have words to say because I really enjoy our tour on this day. Here are some pictures of the tour.
